Educational apps can collect meaningful personal and academic information. A few questions help you assess whether a tool's privacy practices are reasonable for your situation.

What data is collected?

Look for a plain description of what's collected — account details, study content, usage analytics, or device information — in the provider's privacy policy.

How long is it retained?

Check whether the policy states a retention period, and what happens to your data if you delete your account.

Is data shared with third parties?

Look for language about whether data is shared with advertisers, analytics providers, or other third parties, and under what conditions.

Is the tool appropriate for school use?

If a tool is being used for coursework involving other students (e.g., shared notes or class rosters), consider whether your school has data-handling requirements the tool needs to meet.

Can you request deletion?

Check whether the provider describes a process for requesting that your data be deleted, and how to contact them to do so.
